Two of the decstations in E25-143 (course 9 private cluster)
have developed apparent hardware problems:

ballard1 --
If rebooted, will run normally for several hours, then will
crash with a "memory parity error" at apparently random times.
It will then fail fsck on automatic reboot, and will sit
in the monitor until somebody fsck's it by hand. Then the
problem will repeat. It has been like this for about 6 weeks.
When it tries to reboot, the error mesg about the parity
error disappears from the screen -- I don't have any more
details about its contents. I only saw it because I happened
to be standing next to the thing at one point when it crashed.

sherman --
It appears to have crashed into the monitor and tried to reboot itself,
but the words on the display are sort of "fractured" -- its as if
each line of text is split in half then offset verically about
1/4 of a letter, making it impossible to read. Pressing return
has no effect. Pressing the reset button in back makes the screen
blank for as long as you hold the button in, then it returns to
exactly the same image as before when you let go. It has been like
this for less than a day, I think -- I didn't notice it when
I was in yesterday. It might have been since as long ago as Friday.

I am currently acting as cluster manager for these machines (my
email, phone #'s are below). Please contact me if you need additional
information, or if there is anything I can/should do.

thanks,
Diana Smetters
