Subject: computers in the bonsai (N52-431) have been turned off
Date: Thu, 27 Jun 91 18:48:40 EDT
In response to a complaint from DEC field service about the room being
really
hot and wreaking havoc on their equipment in there, I made a site
visit.
Sure enough, the room must have been 95 degrees and 95% humidity. All
the
machines were hot to the touch (shall we say, feverish?).
The window AC has been having mechanical problems with its compressor
for a
month or more now, and has recently died entirely. Hence the heat.
After the
third call to FIXIT I learned that a replacement unit has been ordered
and after
some urging from me the AC might get swapped out sooner rather than
later (given
that it *is* a computer room after all)
I turned all the machines off and put a sign on the outside door
saying "Stay
out until the AC is replaced". I turned all the keyboards upside down
and put a
note on each one saying the same thing. (How many do you think will
have been
used anyway between now and when the AC is replaced -- any wagers?)
The research seminar room is working still, though there is no mac
printer
there. (Should I establish a lousy precedent and move a printer in
there? I'd
rather network the two rooms together via the phone closet and have
people pick
up output in the bonsai -- what do others think?)
Finally, I turned off the color workstation 'corbu' since we are giving
it back
to athena, and moved the monochrome workstation 'jefferson' into its
place in
the design seminar room (the one with all the new macs in it).
The refrigerator in the bonsai kitchen has milk in it that was supposed
to be
sold by may 22. Another jug has the milk curdled and the curds totally
separated from the whey. Any takers?
That's all from the steamy north,
rob
