After talking with Carla, Peter and Richard, here's my revised plan for
Themis:
1) We'll call DEC again tonight, and escalate the problem. Hopefully,
the cause will be found and fixed tonight.
2) If the problem isn't fixed tonight, we (Kim, Brian, and I) will
coordinate with Carla tomorrow about moving everything off Themis
tomorrow during the day. (This will require finding about 2Gigabytes
of space on other NFS servers, and forcing Hesiod propagations to
change hundreds of filsys entries during the day.)
Unfortunately, DEC field service diagnostics haven't yet turned up
any problems. And, none of the developers here think that these problems
could be caused by software. Thus, we're left with a machine that keeps
crashing for unknown reasons, and many users who can't get access to
files stored on it.
In order to better serve the users, and to allow DEC to really work on
Themis, I think we should make clearing things off it top priority tomorrow.
If DEC can't fix the problem tonight, I think we have no choice but to take
Themis out of service by moving everything off it.
