Greetings all,
COMMUNITY GIVING CAMPAIGN: On behalf of the Community Giving Steering
Committee, I would like to inform you that this year's 2000 Community
Giving at MIT Campaign (United Way of Mass. Bay, MIT Community Service
Fund, and Other Charities) will begin on Wednesday, November 1, and run
through Friday, December 29.
GOALS: Our goals this year include increased participation by members
of the MIT community and an increase in our monetary goal to $350,000
or more. We'd like to encourage all members of the MIT community to
give to this worthwhile cause. With your help and support, we will be
able to generate funds that provide much needed help to members of the
greater community of which MIT is a part.
ONE COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN: As you will recall, last year we had as a
"pilot program" the MIT Community Service Fund (CSF) listed as an
option for giving through our Community Giving Campaign. It has now
been decided that MIT will run only ONE charitable giving campaign this
year - with the MIT Community Service Fund (CSF) incorporated into this
fall's annual Community Giving Campaign at MIT Campaign (United Way of
Mass. Bay, MIT Community Service Fund, and Other Charities). Last
year's experiment with this model succeeded in generating the
traditional level of funding for the CSF. We, therefore, DO NOT PLAN
to hold a SEPARATE CSF campaign NEXT SPRING.
CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF: The campaign will officially kick-off on Wednesday,
November 1, with a rally on the 1st floor of the Stratton Student
Center from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Refreshments and balloons will be
available and a lively jazz band will be providing the musical
entertainment. Please stop by during that time to help us raise
awareness about this year's campaign. Next week, you will receive a
letter from Dr. Charles M. Vest announcing the start of the campaign
and asking for your participation this year.
DEPARTMENT SOLICITORS: We are still waiting to hear from several
departments/labs./centers with the name(s) of chief solicitor(s) for
this year's campaign. Please check with your department head to see
if a solicitor has been appointed for your department. If one hasn't
been appointed, please encourage the department head or A.O. to appoint
one as soon as possible. During the campaign, solicitors will be
notified by email regarding campaign-related information that they can
share with their department coworkers. The solicitors are the real key
to running a successful campaign. Please contact me or my assistant,
Annmarie Cameron Foley in the Community Giving Headquarters office
located in Room 50-005 at ext. 3-7914 with the names of any new
solicitors appointed.
DR. VEST LETTER: A personalized letter from Dr. Vest, along with a
Reply Form and a list of 1999 Solicitors, was sent to all Department
Heads and other senior administrative people on October 2 asking for
their assistance in identifing a chief solicitor for their area. The
reply forms were due back to our office by October 11. Unfortunately,
we still have many departments who have not yet
responded.<fontfamily><param>Times</param> </fontfamily> A list of
those departments without solicitors will be announced shortly.
SOLICITOR ORIENTATION PROGRAM/SPEAKERS: A very important Solicitor
Orientation Program will be held this Wednesday, October 25, in the
Mezzanine Lounge (3rd floor) at the Stratton Student Center from 12:30
to 2:00 pm. All solicitors are encouraged to attend this informative
meeting. We are privileged and honored to have Chancellor Lawrence
Bacow speak to the solicitors about Community Giving at MIT. In
addition, other key people, including Campaign Chair John M. Deutch,
and Campaign Cochair, Bill Wohlfarth, will be discussing this year's
campaign along with representatives from the United Way of Mass. Bay
and the MIT Community Service Fund.
DEPARTMENTS WITHOUT SOLICITORS: Department Heads who have not as yet
appointed a Chief Solicitor(s) for their area will be contacted in the
next week or so by Professor Deutch or other members of the Steering
Committee with the request that a solicitor be appointed as soon as
possible.
PLEDGE FORM PACKETS: Next week, members of the MIT community will
receive personalized pledge form packets via interdepartmental mail.
We encourage you to read the materials and consider giving to one or
more of the programs described: United Way of Mass. Bay, MIT Community
Service Fund, or to any local 501(C)(3) health and human services
agency not affilated with the United Way. Completed pledge forms
should be sent to your department Chief Solicitor or to the Campaign
Headquarters in Room 50-005.
CAMPAIGN EVENTS: Again this year, we plan to run a two-week clothing
and non-perishable food drive from December 4 through December 15 with
various drop-off locations around campus. (More information will be
forthcoming closer to the event, including the various drop-off
locations around campus). In addition, we will be having a "Books Are
Fun" Book Fair on Wednesday, November 15, in the lst floor lobby of the
Stratton Student Center from 10-4 pm. Because this fundraising event
was very popular last year, many people asked us to run a book fair
again this year. (Further information will be published in Tech
Talk.)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: If you have any questions, or if you would
like a copy of Dr. Vest's letter and/or reply form for identifying a
Chief Solicitor for your area, please call Annmarie Cameron Foley at
ext. 3-7914.
THANK YOU: That you for whatever you can do to identify a Chief
Solicitor for your area. Help us to help others in need! Thank you
for your support of this important Institute-wide effort.
Liz Mulcahy
