This note is a heads-up on the machine 'm1-190-1' which I just
freshly reinstalled with the 8.4 Athena release. Here is the full
story:
I was testing the projector setup in 1-190 today when I noticed that
the Sun Ultra 10 workstation in the room was still running the Athena
8.3 release. I also noticed that the machine had the unusual address
m1-190 (rather than m1-190-1) and did not have cluster information.
By checking the cluster info and the reverse DNS lookup on the machine's
IP address, I found that the machine really was supposed to be called
m1-190-1. I fixed this in /etc/athena/rc.conf and rebooted, hoping
it would then take the new release. When it didn't, I relink /srvd
and /os to the 8.4 packs and tried the update. This failed during
while untarring the miniroot, apparently because /var/athena/miniroot/etc
was a file, not a directory. I fixed that, and tried the update
again, but this left the machine in an unbootable state. I then
reinstalled the 8.4 release from scratch over the network. The
machine now appears to be working fine in every respect.
