The power spike around 11:30 am was due to an explosion in a manhole at
the intersection of Vassar Street and Mass Ave. A conversation w/
Walter* of Cambridge Electric at 12:45 pm revealed that power which is
ordinarily carried on two feeders is now being carried on the one which
did not blow out. This means that the one remaining in service is
carrying at close to capacity and could itself be vulnerable. In
addition, there may be other spikes during the afternoon as CELCO tries
to repair or replace the blown line.

Advice here is to note that any work/servers may be more vulnerable than
usual. Save computer files often and onto floppies. By 2:00 pm, Walter
had his people take a look at the damage, and thought that it might be
six to eight hours before things return to their usual stable (?)
status.

In addition, we've had a huge number of calls to the Micro Help Line
reporting Mac keyboard problems as a consequence of the power spike.
Most seem to be remedied by rebooting the system.
