We have reviewed the areas affected by the work for phase 2 of the classrooms.
The project will affect areas in the basement and on the 1st floor as follows:
1. Basement corridor - There will be major disruption in the corridor
to extend the duct main to the south. Chilled water piping will need
to be relocated out of the corridor which will require a system
shutdown. Rooms that are cooled by this loop located in the basement
will be without cooling unless temporary provisions are made.
2. Rooms 1-050 (Grad students area) This area will be shut down for
an extended time period. New ductwork will be routed through the room
to 1-150 and 1-246. The ceiling will need to be removed new chilled
water mains will be installed through this space to free up space in
the corridor for the duct mains.
3. Corridor 1-000cc and U/M 1-074 - The existing air handling unit
will be demolished and removed along with existing duct mains.
4. Room 1-142 Athena Computer Room- A new supply duct riser will be
routed through the chase next to col. 8. This might be able to
accessed from the corridor but it would affect the corridor traffic
and finishes. Piping would be routed across the ceiling of the office
1-138 and the Athena computer room 1-142. MIT may want to consider
installing sprinklers in these spaces when work is being done. MIT
has requested that a recirculating fancoil unit be installed to cool
the telcom closet adjacent to the Athena Computer room.
5. Lobby 1-100LA - Sprinkler piping will need to be installed across
the lobby. Existing moldings and ceiling will be affected
6. Outside air intakes - We recommend that MIT consider adding two
new louvres to the north wall of the mechanical room to provide air
intake to the new AHU in the basement.
7. Room -033 Intsr. - New duct risers will be routed through this
room to get to room 135. Holes will need to be cut through the floor
to get the ducts into the shaft above. MIT has requested that
ventilation and cooling from central air handling unit be added to
Room 1-033 as part of this project.
8. 1st Floor chilled water main - We need to relocate the existing
chilled water mains in room 150 to coordinate with the new ceiling
plan. The system will need to be shut down, drained and refilled.
9. Rooms 1-071, 1-075 and 1-079 will be affected by the work
associated with the new AHU to serve Phase 3. This scope is still not
clear and will be dependent apon the budget. A new supply main is
currently shown above these rooms to get the new supply risers. We are
still working on the routing for the ducts.
We think that this the majority of the issues involved in phase 2. We
recommend that the team conduct a walk through to look at each area
and have MIT advise on any phasing issues. We also recommend that room
050 be renovated to provide proper ventilation and cooling as parts of
this project This room is very oppressive and will be affected by the
construction. It will also allow MIT to decommission and remove the
old condenser water system that is in the corridor that was suppose to
feed an old AHU serving this area. The system does not appear to be
operating.
Please call with any questions or comments.
