(Maybe someone will get this, I'm sending it via mit.edu instead of athena...)
I've been getting "Deferred: Connection timed out during user open with athena"
from attempts to send mail from e40-008-5. telnet athena smtp indicates that
the connection is occurring, but the sendmail never answers...
