w20-575-12 not rebooting correctly

I found w20-575-12 at the console login and was unable to get it back
to the normal state, so I tried rebooting the machine. This didn't
work. It's still at the console login, but gave a number of errors on
reboot. I didn't understand them well enough to be able to say what's
wrong, but enough to tell the the machine looked pretty
unhappy. /usr/lib/security/pam_afs was missing and it had problems
with vold. There were other things wrong too though.
