The R5000/XZ machines should now all be up and running Athena 8.3/IRIX 6.5;
this was done by installing 8.2/6.2, and updating. (There was a problem
with the sgi62 install that required a custom install as a workaround,
but I have now fixed that problem).
I still do not know why the machines cannot install 6.5 directly. I don't
think it has anything to do with the R5000/XZ graphics combination per se,
as the machines seemed to be in an I/O-related hang. I was able to resume
the install manually after rebooting. I am more suspicious that the machines
I looked at all had R5000 revision 1.0.
The next step would be to try and reproduce the problem on a test machine.
If possible, it would also be interesting to try a newer rev R5000 in one
of these machines.
