possible problem with sms updating on cezanne

I don't think that cezanne is keeping up with changes to membership in groups.
Specifically, I have created a directory named /mit/2050/doc and given it a
group ownership of '2050', which comes out as G2050 when you `ls -lg` its files.

Jdevans and smyser are both in the group but I can't read his files.

Many moons ago we had a similar problem with the server -- jdevans' membership
in some group wasn't ever known that one fileserver until it had its software
reinstalled, then suddenly he appeared. I think the problem on cezanne (and
probably on seurat too) was never actually solved. Can someone try and see what
might be going on?
