I am not sure if I should be writing this complaint to you, but I have
to write it to someone because my only other alternative is to scream in
anger here in the Athena cluster. Now because I think I am not such an
inconsiderate person, I choose not to disturb my colleagues here in the
Athena cluster. And so I write this note. Now I know that you who are
reading this is most probably not the one responsible for my situation.
And so you have every right to just ignore this note. But maybe you
might know the people who are in charge of checking the athena clusters
and you might do me the favor of asking them to be a bit more
considerate in rebooting stations next time.
Now, I can understand the reason behind all of Athena's Rules of Use.
In fact, I agree with all of them! I am perfectly aware that since
there are, in general, many students who would like to use the
computers, it is important to have a rule that workstations locked for
more than 20 minutes should be rebooted.
BUT MY GOD, THERE ARE LESS THAN 20 PEOPLE IN THIS ENTIRE STUDENT CENTER
CLUSTER! THERE ARE MORE THAN TWICE AS MANY COMPUTERS FREE! I HAD BEEN
RUNNING MY SIMULATIONS FOR MORE THAN 3 HOURS, AND ONLY WENT DOWN TO
LOBDELL TO GET SOME HARD EARNED DINNER. I HAD LEFT A POLITE NOTE SAYING
"Please do not log me out. Calculation still running."
I HAD BEEN GONE FOR LESS THAN A STUPID HOUR.
MY THINGS WERE ON THE DESK,
CLEARLY INDICATING THAT I INTENDED TO BE BACK VERY VERY VERY SOON.
A WHOLE AFTERNOON WASTED,
BECAUSE SOME PERSON WAS TOO LAZY TO READ A NOTE WRITTEN IN VERY BRIGHT RED INK,
AND TOO LAZY TO LOOK AROUND AND SEE THAT I AM NOT TYING UP MY WORKSTATION UNNECESSARILY.
AROUND ME ALONE, THERE ARE 7 OTHER ULTRA 10's UNUSED. WHOEVER YOU ARE,
YOU JUST KILLED A WHOLE AFTERNOON'S WORK. And I really hope you are
happy. BECAUSE I AM DEFINITELY NOT!
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Karen Veroy
