At the IS forum yesterday, I provided an overview of the Institute's
Classification and Compensation project

While the exact presentation is not on the web, detail about the project is
available: http://web.mit.edu/personnel/www/compensation/proj.htm

As was clear yesterday, while a lot of work has been done up to this point,
a lot work still remains. The intent of the overview was to give people a
sense of what is going on, rather than waiting until the end of the
project, when everything is cast in concrete.

Because this is an Institute-wide effort, the focus is on flexibility to
accomodate the different needs and interests of the varied departments,
within an over arching umbrella of an MIT compenstation philosophy.
Because this is a people system (and not a computer system), there are
nuances and variations that a set of policies or guidelines can't fully
address. Which means there may not always be precisely rule driven answer
for every question - "it depends" is valid response. Those of you that
like clear cut answers for every question may find this somewhat
uncomfortable. However, even if the questions do not have a clear cut
answer, they are good questions to ask, and you can get more information
regarding the parameters that are considered in making an individual
decision (ie on what the 'it depends' depends)

Although for most people this will be a transparent process - something
that happens behind the scenes - as we get closer to assigning the job
levels, individuals who have questions or concerns about the personal
impact of the reclassification should feel free to talk with their Team
Leader, their Director, me, or Alyce Johnson. The intent is to be as open
as possible about process.

........Allison
