Domestic Water Conservation program
The Utilities Group in the Department of Facilities has kicked off a
campus-wide program to conserve domestic water. The goal is to conserve
water resources and generate savings in payments to the City of
Cambridge Water Department for water and sewer charges. For example,
existing flushometer toilets use an average of 3.74 gallons per flush
in academic buildings. A fifty percent reduction in water
will be achieved by replacing them with fixtures that use only 1.6
gallons per flush . At current water rates, the projected savings in
the first year alone from this program will be $164,394 . These savings
will increase in subsequent years as water and sewer rates continue to
rise at a minimum of 5% annually.
Work that needs to be done...
We have hired Acqualine Resources of Newton,
Massachusetts to work with Facilities Utilities and Zone staff to :
- replace toilets to flush at 1.6 gallons per flush where
possible
- retrofit sink faucets with tamper resistant aerators
- retrofit showers with low flow shower heads where possible
Those bathrooms where work is being done will be temporarily unavailable
for use for 2-3 hours. In buildings where risers may need to be shut
off , we will follow standard shutdown request procedures and work will
be scheduled to cause minimal interruption of water service.
Work has been completed in Buildings E19, E18, E17, E25,E23, E15 and E38
and will continue sequentially through the following list of academic
buildings in the East , Main and West campus:
E32,E34,E48,E40,E51.E52.E53,E56,E60,68,66,54,56,16,18,2,6,4,8,10,3,5,1,7
,13,11,24,36,31,14,W20,W31,W32,W34,W23,W16,W15 .
We thank you for your co-operation in helping us with water conservation
on campus.
