Athena printing infrastructure upgrade Wednesday night

Late the night of Wednesday, January 27, there will be a major upgrade
in the Athena printing infrastructure. This will affect almost every
aspect of centralized printing: Moira, the Ops/SAP print servers, the
Hesiod printcap entries, and the bootp server.
The purpose of this upgrade is to move all of the printer information
we are currently keeping track of into Moira, instead of having it
scattered across multiple servers, where the different pieces can get
out of sync with each other. This will allow Ops to keep the printing
system working better than it does now, with less effort.
The new system has been tested thoroughly. However, with a change this
large, there could easily be a handful of problems. We expect that a
small number of printers may not make the transition to the new system
properly.
There should not be any noticeable outage of any of the services
(except a very brief outage of the Moira server to install the updated
server binary). But if you (or your customers) notice problems after
Wednesday night such as:
- A printer name is no longer recognized from Athena or SAP
- Jobs sent to a printer don't print
- A printer does not come back up successfully after rebooting
- You have lost KLPC access to a printer you should have access to
- etc
then send mail to "ops@mit.edu" with the details.
