The SGI w20-575-72 started exhibiting a strange problem when I was
logging out and back in repeatedly (I was messing with my dotfiles).
All of a sudden, the machine would let me log in, but then as it ran my
dotfiles, another Xlogin window would appear. This Xlogin would stick
around while my session was running. The Xlogin screensaver mode even
kicked in once or twice while I was typing -- it immediately
disappeared when I hit another key. I tried to log in using this other
Xlogin while my session was running, but doing so killed my old session
and did not start a new one; it just brought up an Xlogin on the normal
blue startup screen.
I did not experiment any further. Instead, I rebooted the machine
(logged in as root, typed in the "reboot" command). This seems to have
made the problem go away for now.
