problems with attaching during login

I sent the following message to olc the other day and was told to send it to
the hardware hotline:
Recently, there has been an extreme problem logging on from the SUM
cluster in building 20. It says "home directory not available". I know
how to get around the problem -- continue, type "attach -n loginid"
logout and login again, but lately I've had to attach my home directory
about 3 or 4 times before meeting with any success, which makes logging
in an extreme nuisance. Is there anything that can be done to make
things run more smoothly? I know I'm not the only one who has had this
problem.
It looks like the problem has always been around to some degree, but within
the last week or two it has become rather extreme. I (and everybody else who
uses this cluster) would appreciate your looking into the problem.
