I logged into the machine and was having a lot of trouble (exmh wouldn't
start, cvs commits failed with: "cannot create temporary file"). I
figured out that
things weren't working in the tmp directory, so I tried a reboot to clean
up the filesystem. The boot sequence stopped, however, because fsck
failed on the /var filesystem. So now the machine will not boot properly
(it goes into maintenance mode and asks you to run fsck manually).
