On advice from a third party, I did run the fsck command manually
with the "yes to every question" option. That fixed the machine
enough that it completed its reboot at last. I was able to log in
as root and my files are being copied off now, so they will not
be a concern any longer.
However, there were still /var errors in the reboot process, and
logging in as a regular user doesn't work. -- An error window comes
up saying that it couldn't "modify the user's session key".
