Hi-
I logged into one of the new Sun Ultra 10's in the M37 cluster, and I noticed
that the computer was running incredibly slow. I looked at the processes
using "top" and there was a xmcd process which was hogging about 99.97%
of the cpu time and had it way overloaded. The user for this process
was a 5 digit number like 10???
I entered as superuser to kill the job, but for some reason, the job
would not get killed. I entered
kill -9 process-id
several times, and got no error, but the job remained. I logged out and
attemped to reboot the machine (pressing Stop-A and then "sync").
The sync failed and it could not boot off the hard disk.
I then noticed that several of the other computers appear to be in
single-user mode as well. (nothing to do with me)
Go figure.
