Subject: Chilled Water Plants Problems
This is an emergency notification from Physical Plant.
The central campus chilled water plant is having chiller equipment
problems and is attempting to bring on standby equipment. Even if we
are successful in bringing on the standby equipment, there will be a
period of several hours that chilled water temperatures will be above
normal. Buildings in the main campus as well as E17, E18 and some west
and northwest buildings that are served from the central chilled water
plant are experiencing elevated chilled water temperatures. Process
cooling loads as well as air conditioning systems are being affected.
Physical Plant will have to shed load in non-critical areas for comfort
cooling in order to provide as much cooling as possible for critical
areas such as animal facilities and science buildings. Critical
laboratory equipment dependent on chilled water cooling should be
secured or otherwise protected to prevent damage as a result of
overheating or condensation problems.
The east campus chilled water plant is also experiencing capacity
problems and those in buildings on the east campus are experiencing
similar elevated chilled water temperatures.
If you are able, please set thermostats in comfort cooling areas to
78-80 degrees during this period of abnormal operation.
We have activated the Emergency Notification phone line, ext. 3-1300
which will be updated as conditions dictate.
Please distribute this message to department personnel who may be
affected.
