Campus floods and power outages

On Saturday, June 14, 1998 at approximately 4:30pm, the MIT campus
experienced major flooding and numerous electrical power outages. Ground
and basement flooding resulted due to the extreme period of heavy rain.
Building pumps for a few buildings were unable to keep up with the
increased volume of water. As a result, several buildings experienced
electrical power outages for a period of approximately 3 to 4hours. The
buildings with power outages included W45, W34, W91, W84, W71, W70, W61,
W4, 54, 56, 16, 66, 68, and 57.
As of 9:30pm Saturday power to all buildings has been restored with the
exception of buildings W45, W61 and 57. Buildings W45, W61 and 57 will
be down for an extended period until repairs can be made to the
electrical switchgear and various equipment. Work repairs are currently
in progress.
