Portnoy and oliver are having trouble with their Ethernet connections.
The console window on portnoy contains many messages of the form "un0:
N intermittent ethernet failures", where N is an number between 1 and
50. On both portnoy and oliver, there are problems in using "ping" to
connect to other systems (even ones on the same Ethernet cable), and
in contacting remote file servers.
Portnoy and oliver have adjacent taps at the far end of a single
Ethernet cable. However, there are other machines less far down on the
same Ethernet cable with no problems in network connectivity.
Portnoy and oliver are located in the SIPB office (W20-557). They are
the two workstations nearest the door.
Portnoy: IBM RT PC
S/N: 26-0003697
Oliver: VAXstation II/RC
