Hello Hotline,
Regarding the status of barrett-1, a private workstation Sparc 5
experiencing repeated problems due to "asynchronous memory faults":
I have backed up the necessary date from /var and also some configuration
files (passwd.local, srvtab). The machine is ready to be fixed.
Based on the error log listing "asynchronous memory fault" as the cause
of the system panic, I think it could be a bad memory chip or motherboard
(this advice came from consultant Oliver Thomas). Given that, Ed and I
would rather the machine were completely replaced, to ensure that
the problem won't continue, rather than a piecemeal repair. While we
had initially wanted the machine to be up as soon as possible for a demo,
we had to cancel the demo because of the continuing problems, and now
we'd rather just have it fixed for good, even if it takes a day or two.
I have listed the relevant part of /var/adm/messages on the screen of
the machine. It is currently booted in single-user mode. The machine is
in 14N-336.
Thanks again for your help.
