Last night, the Athena print server paper-pusher was upgraded. This
now means that all of the Athena print servers (aside from the two SAP
print servers, which only house SAP queues and are scheduled for
upgrade shortly) are now running Athena version 8.1, and have been
upgraded to 2G print spool disks.
What this means: Less lossage, hopefully. The new print server
software has a number of security and functionality patches,
including:
- raw FrameMaker and PDF (Adobe Acrobat) files spooled to the
print servers are rejected (like DVI and arbitrary binary files).
This should cut down on paper wastage by accidentally spooled non-PS
print jobs. [*]
- if a job is submitted to the wrong print server for a queue,
the job will be automatically forwarded to the correct print server,
as long as the queue does not require Kerberos authentication. This
is mainly useful for borken DOS clients which keep their configuration
information locally and don't use Hesiod to find out a queue's server.
- numerous security holes and buffer overruns in the software
patched.
- bug in hpcomm fixed such that large files can be properly
submitted from the print servers to the printer (the
infinite-repeating large job lossage mode seen on some earlier print
servers).
- larger spool disks mean it's less likely for a server to
lose because of large spooled jobs

[*] hotline: If you are still seeing paper spewage from non-PS jobs,
let me know and we can try to characterize and reject other common
non-PS submissions.
