I believe I accidentally left a background process running
as root on this machine.

I su'd to root to chown a file I had created on my personal
Linux mahine as root and moved to my Athena account. While
su'd to root, I accidentally started a process which I
usually run in the background while I'm logged in. I quit
the root shell before I realized I had merely backgrounded rather
than killed the process. I couldn't seem to log in as root
after that to kill the process.

I realize it's against the rules of use to run processes in the
background, so I'm very sorry this happened. I didn't mean
to break any rules. I guess I was a little too tired for my
own good.
