The following information was received from Commonwealth Electric SCADA
(Cambridge Electric Campany) as to the events of August 7, 1997:
At approximately 5:45pm two(2) 15kv tie cables, out of a total of
six(6), faulted between the Kendall Station and
Putman/Prospect Station in North Cambridge. The resulting overload
caused Kendall Station to trip off line. The double cable
fault also caused the MIT Gas Turbine to trip.
At approximately 7:40pm, while Cambridge was restoring power to
customers in East Cambridge, an event occurred in a manhole that
resulted in a fatality. The fault caused circuits at Putnam Station to
trip.
In order to troublshoot the problems and continue restoration of power
to customers, Cambridge Electric cleared off most circuits originating
from Putnam Station (including MIT) and began an orderly piecemeal
restoration of power, isolating any cable sections of questionable
reliability.
PRESENT STATUS:
KENDALL STATION - All 3 generators are up and running stable...back up
diesels are in ready mode. Repairs to cables are in progress...additonal
crews have been brought in to assist.
PUTNAM STATION - No damage sustained. Putnam is in full, stable,
operating mode. The 115kv switchyard is fully functional. All circuits
to MIT are in normal operation.
MIT GAS TURBINE - repairs in progress
