Hi guys,

Prof Rutledge's Athenized SGI has a broken floppy drive. Here's
the information I've been able to gather so far:

When he inserts a disk and attempt to cp files, he gets:

>cheindy3 [9]% cp xfour1.c /floppy
>UX:cp: ERROR: Cannot create /floppy/xfour1.c
>UX:cp: REASON: Permission denied

then when he types eject, he gets a console message "/floppy not mounted".

The disk chirps every few minutes, like it is repeatedly trying to do
something with the floppy (like mount it, maybe), but without success.

I (Katie) asked:
>Does the drive also make noise when no disk is in it? Are you able to
>manually eject the floppy with the paper clip trick? Also, did rebooting
>the machine have any effect?

He answered:

no noise when no floppy in.

'eject' or paper clip both work. with 'eject', I get '/floppy not mounted'
message on console. When I change to su and issue the command
'mount -t hfs /dev/rdsk/fds0d3.3.5hi /floppy' I get:

mount_hfs: can't initialize /dev/rdsk/fds0d3.3.5hi: No such file or directory
mount: giving up on:
   /floppy

rebooting has no effect.
