The rel-eng AFS cell has been deprecated for several years now. It is
time for its lingering scribe-like death* to come to an end. In order
to facilitate this, on Tuesday 4/22, I will be removing the mountpoint
/afs/rel-eng.athena.mit.edu, the link /afs/rel-eng, and the parallel
read-write mountpoint, and link. I will also cause the only remaining
server that is the rel-eng cell to stop exporting data, in case people
have other mountpoints to it (this case may cause users to get "no
such device" errors). The actual hardware supporting the rel-eng cell
will not be decommissioned until after finals (in case there is
something depending on it that we don't know about), but some of the
disks are logging errors and regular backups were stopped a long time
ago (we do have an archival dump from the time when backups were
stopped). Basically this is just a final warning of what has been
happening for a while. If you have any questions, feel free to reply
to ops@mit.edu.

originated it.
