problems with vold and CD-ROM drive

Hello,
There is a question in our OLC queue about a private workstation (in the
Political Science dept, I belive?), KANT.MIT.EDU
The user has a problem accessing the CD-ROM drive. A previous
consultant has suggested restarting vold, but that does not appear to
work.
I have included a transcript of the session so far below.
The user also called on the phone and mentioned that she had tried the
final suggestion listed below in the transcript, to chmod the device as
root, but said that it did not work, and could not remember the error.
If you have any suggestions, or could send somebody to work on it, we
would appreciate it.

Hi, now I am getting this:
As root, please run
chmod 666 /devices/iommu@0,10000000/sbus@0,10001000/espdma@4,8400000/esp@4,8800000/sd@6,0:c,raw
to give yourself permission to access the CD-ROM device.
