>Subject: Central Utilities Plant Chilled Water System Construction
>
>This Winter, a fifth chiller is being added to the CUP chiller plant, in
>order to permit us to carry increased cooling loads and to improve the
>reliability of the system. In order to complete the piping connections, it
>will be necessary to modify normal operation of the Central Chilled water
>system for a four day period of time, currently scheduled for the week of
>March 17. The East Campus Plant, normally serving the area to the East of
>Ames Street, will be fully operational.
>
>The following describes the expected impact in different portions of the
>Campus.
>
>Main campus area, bounded by Mass Avenue, the railroad tracks, Main Street,
>Ames Street, and Memorial Drive.
>
>During the 4 day period, this area of Campus will be served by the East
>Campus Plant through a newly installed interconnecting piping and operation
>is expected to be near normal. While this interconnection is not capable of
>carrying normal Summer loads, there is more than adequate capacity for the
>Winter loads and even Spring loads. The worst case situation would be an
>abnormally warm day, when we would expect to meet laboratory and critical
>cooling needs, but may not fully meet comfort cooling needs on such a day.
>During the previous week, we will be verifying this operating mode for
>limited periods of time while both plants are operational.
>
>
>West and Northwest area, W16, W20, NW13, NW14
>
>
>During the 4 day period, this area will be served by unrefrigerated chilled
>water, directly from a cooling tower. If the weather remains cool and dry,
>operation will appear normal. If there is an unseasonable stretch of humid
>weather in the 50's or 60's, there will be diminished cooling from the
>system.
>
>Approval for this shutdown will be handled by the usual shutdown procedure,
>and this notice is intended as a preview to assist in planning.
>
>
>If there are any questions about expected operation, or if there are
>anticipated difficulties, please call Carl Hagge at 3-4755.
