The SIPB cell is converting renelda.mit.edu to be an AFS
database server. This conversion is scheduled to happen Friday
evening around 5 PM.
This process involves restarting several AFS server processes
on all SIPB AFS servers. Potentially, this may create a short (up to
five minute) outage
in which clients cannot access new volumes. This might cause timeouts
when people started new programs in SIPB lockers, although it is
unlikely to effect currently-running programs.
If things go badly wrong, a prolonged outage of the entire
SIPB cell could result. This is not expected to happen: the process
is fairly simple and well understood. However, in the event that the
SIPB cell does fail, users should:
* Wait for their workstations to time out
* type detach sipb
* type attach sipb
This will use the Athena copy of the sipb locker.
Unfortunately, other sipb lockers like linux, netbsd, outland and java
are not replicated outside the SIPB cell so they would be unavailable
in a global outage.
We will keep people informed via the consult instance.
