This SS5 was reported hung on an update. The professor tried to reboot system.
It hung on running track. I have investigated/troubleshooted this system
inside and out to come to the following conclusion:

1. The software was found corrupted.
2. Unable to re-install due to constant CRC Framing Errors.
3. Have troubleshooted all internal hardware. All looks o.k.
4. System failing with CRC Framing errors while running watch-net.
5. Have moved system to another room/jack. No change.
6. Several people including the Professor have experienced very slow systems
within the last week or so. Ping commands would not respond for 15 minutes
   etc...
7. Have tested the jack: Looks o.k.
8. After a few hrs of extensive troubleshooting, have removed system to the
E40 staging rm (with the professor) and have re-installed the software. All
went well. No more CRC Framing errors existed. Logged on to w/s just fine.
9. Brought system back to 12-110, and have changed the name back to elvalle,
and have changed the IP address back to 18.84.0.42. System now once again
   hanging on running track.
10. I conclude that there is something wrong with the 84 subnet, beyond the
    local jacks.

** Please forward this to the appropriate people troubleshooting/repair **.
Professor Tomas is in desparate need of a working Athena system....
Also, please respond to hotline with the findings.
                                        Thanks much,
                                                   --Lou 10/1/96
