Subject: Network Services
Cc: smonde@MIT.EDU, jjmorey@MIT.EDU, pcollymo@MIT.EDU

I heard today that the department's request to turn on a network drop in
37-401 was issued on 7/24/96 and that the work will not be complete until
1-2 weeks. After talking with Phyllis Collymore, I discovered that many if
not all of the Aero/Astro department network-related requests since mid
June have been essentially ignored until they were discovered yesterday by
Stephanie Mondesire. (This is a large number of requests since our
department has undergone substantial changes this summer with many office
and equipment moves).

I find this level of service completely unacceptable

As faculty supervisor of the Aero/Astro department computing
infrastructure, this is just the latest of many frustrating interactions I
have witnessed with MIT DCNS. I am sure that Phyllis Collymore, as
administrator in charge of Information Systems, can probably recall many
more incidents.

One problem in dealing with DCNS is that, from our perspective, there is no
structure to the organization and we never know who to call with requests,
questions and requisitions for work. Over the past couple of years, DCNS
has required from our department a single contact person for all
network-related activities. Despite the difficulties in coordinating this
(MIT faculty and staff like to be independent) we complied with this
requirement and I think that it is reasonable that we request reciprocity
and have a SINGLE contact person at DCNS who is responsible for our network
operations and who can be relied upon to provide efficient and timely
service. The Aero/Astro department pays large monthly network fees to MIT
and I think that we deserve professional service.

I should be most happy to discuss this further with you, or with anyone
else in DCNS so that we can work together to improve the networking
operations at MIT. My greatest fear is that these problems and complaints
fall on deaf ears.
