can't print to E40 printers

From klee.mit.edu, the workstation in my office (E40-342D), I tried
to print a mail message on 'nil' using:
show cur | lpr -Pnil
I got a sequence of error messages:
Lost connection to printer....
Lost connection to printer....
Lost connection to printer....
Lost connection to printer....
and had to cancel the 'lpr' command with CTRL-c. I tried to print
on 'calvin' with:
show cur | lpr -Pcalvin
and got a different error:
Lost connection to printer....
Remote printer does not support kerberos authentication
Try again using the -u option
I tried using '-u'
show cur | lpr -Pcalvin -u
and got a sequence of:
Lost connection to printer....
Lost connection to printer....
which, again, I had to cancel with CTRL-C. I tried printing on
the 'ajax' printer in W20, and it worked fine:
show cur | lpr -Pajax
returned a prompt (i.e., no error message).
It doesn't seem relevant, but in case it is, my kerberos tickets
looked fine:
