This afternoon portnoy (a sparc5 in the sipb office)'s hard disk has
started making an annoying high-pitched whining noise. It didn't last
very long and stopped of it's own accord, but seems kind of
disturbing.
I recall this happening once a few weeks ago, but didn't pay
too much attention.
What's the normal procedure here? Wait for the disk to keel over,
watch more closely for errors, or just replace it outright?
Note that this machine does have local customizations so replacing
it will need a little bit of coordination.
This certainly isn't urgent (well, not yet :-)), so can wait until
after the holidays...
