printer problem

Hi,
I have a problem with printer "thesis". It has been going on for a month
and I know you guys have been working on it, but the problem persists.
Basically, when I print my thesis using duplex (printing on both sides)
the bold characters an larger than 12 fonts smear such that the letters
look blurry. This doesn't happen on single page printing.
I have been trying to get my thesis printed for almost a month now with
no luck. We have also tried other printers in the athena cluster but their
quality is much worse than thesis. Would someone be able to get to the
bottom of this, if not, can you recommend a free alternative for this?
