Well, I did report it to hardware, and they told me that DEC had come out
and replaced the drive! Which left me to assume it was a software problem.
As I recall, the drive didn't even spin; it wasn't a problem reading.
Maybe the cables weren't attached properly. But you'd think the DEC tech
who replaced the drive would have checked it. I think when I compared the
files and links in /dev to the computer next to it, there were some
differences. But I'm neither a DEC nor a Unix guru.

Sorry it took so long to respond to this. I was recently hired to look at
the backlog of bug reports.
This sounds more like a harware bug, and should have been sent to hotline.
I think that after all this time the bug has been taken care of, but
I will go to the machine and make sure.
