Rebooting did not help. When I logged in as root, i noticed that
connections to afs were timing out, and certain files and programs like
srvd, kdestroy, reactivate, etc. that appear to be linked through afs
were unavailable.

The final error was that the machine was in the middle of being updated;
"contact hotline."

Since this is a private machine, do you have/need the root password? As
the following letter explains, Hotline should in fact help repair this
machine if it is not too much trouble (and explain to me if it is
something i can do in the future)

Thanks,

	mike

JJ,

I don't know what the scoop is. I don't use the machine. It's probably
abused and clogged with chalk dust. The reason Michael is contacting
you is that I have delegated the responsibilites for this machine to him
for the summer.

Please accept Michael's description of the problem and work with him to
resolve the matter. It is not necessary to check again with me unless a
moderate amount of your time or our money would be involved.

Hope that helps

- -- Gary
