I left a message on the answering service, but I decided to leave on
here as well. I was in the process of limiting remote access on an
IBM RS6000 in our lab. I added users to the /etc/passwd file. I
have been receiving assistance from a consultant at olc (wchuang).
Somehow, the file got deleted except for the lines with my user
information (which were in the middle of the file). Now I cannot
log in as root. When I reboot the machine, I get the message
"subsystem user id could not be established." I fear that the
software may need to be reinstalled. I would also appreciate it if
someone could show me how to edit /etc/passwd without it becoming
deleted.

Please email me or call me at x3-6440 at your earliest convenience.
