Portnoy is a Sparcstation 5 in the SIPB office.

I was logged in as root on Portnoy's console, with a cwd of
/afs/athena/user/t/l/tlyu, and ran the command "more README". The file
was displayed, but this was immediately followed by an endless stream
of errors messages saying "short write -1 XX", where XX is usually 400
but occasionally 392 and less occasionally other smaller integers. The
machine continues to behave as usual, except for this endless stream
of messages being printed to the console.

As it takes about 1.7 seconds for a message to enter the screen and
scroll off it, and there are 34 rows on the console, I estimate that
these messages were being printed about once every twentieth of a
second.

I have left the machine in this state, in case it would be useful to
someone trying to determine the cause of this problem.

In case it is relevant, earlier, when I ran "more" on a file longer
than the screen (such that the "More" status line was printed at the
bottom of the screen), Portnoy's speaker would make a short
popping/ripping noise.
