--------------

Effective Thursday, March 23, 1995 Physical Plant will notify DCNS
of shutdowns via E-Mail. This new mode of notification is intended to
make the process more efficient.

When Physical Plant needs to shutdown a given utility (Electric,
Water, Heat etc.) they will send E-Mail to the SHUTDOWNS distribution
list. Physical Plant will still wait for a response from both Network
Operations and Cluster Support but the reply should be sent via e-mail
by responding to the sender of the initial message and CC'ing
SDVERIFY@MIT.EDU This will ensure that shift changes with PPL will not
cause a reply to go unread.

One important change is that, with Jeff Schiller's consent, PPL
will use some discretion on which types of shutdowns we need to be
notified about. This would include domestic water and the like that
clearly would have no impact on our systems or networks. The "Golden
Rule" will be: When in Doubt Notify Us.

An important point to consider is that PPL should, ideally, receive
one response from Network Operations and one response from Cluster
Support. The fact that the notification will be sent to a distribution
list has the potential for confusion in this area. For Cluster Support,
the note received in Hotline will be addressed and closed out or updated
to reflect current status.

Mary Files has also asked that we provide her feedback on the first
couple of notifications if there is any specific information she has
omitted. Mary is attempting to standardize the information in the
notification messages. This is necessary due to the fact that PPL is
planning on communicating all PPl information via E-Mail Campus-Wide. We
are, to some extent, the pilot site for this new procedure.

If there are any questions or concerns please let me know.
