I would like to submit a formal request for at most eleven Athena
cluster machines that are being removed from clusters. I understand
that Decstation 3100, old sparcs, etc. are available. I will install
them in our Library and take full responsibility for maintaining them,
compiling software locally, etc. This arrangement will not pose a
significant ongoing human resource burden to I/S in any way, such as
to OLC or Hotline. If the machines fail or in any way pose a problem
for MITnet or I/S, they will be turned off immediately and either
repaired or given away to another worthy student or research group.
If a living group further away from campus submits a similar request
and there are not enough available machines, I withdraw my request in
favor of them.
As a matter of principle, student groups and living groups should have
priority for these machines because the students pay tuition and
because configuring and maintaining the machines is a valuable
experience for students, consistent with the general Institute
priorities. Please consider incorporating these principles into your
general policy/plan if you have not already done so.
Thank you,
Michael Jacknis
