Please take note of the following message sent from Neil
Tomlinson of the Electrical Department via Plant-Notify:
UPCOMING SHUTDOWNS
The following is a tentative list of electrical shutdowns that
will be necessary to perform this late winter/early spring. I will
probably begin in a week or so. Realizing the impact loss of power has
on the community, I thought you would like advance notice of what was
coming up in your areas, so that you may start preparing. Please keep
in mind, the shutdowns will still be cleared through the Operations Center
as is normal procedure.
Building 20-A Wing:
Due to the new short circuit requirements for Cogen, normal
electric power will be shutdown to replace the primary 2400 volt fuses.
The shutdown will take approximately 15 minutes. I anticipate an
early weekday morning shutdown, before many of the occupants arrive to
work.
Building E52:
A shutdown of normal electric power will be necessary to
correct several deficiencies in the switchboard wiring that we
discovered as a result of another unrelated outage. It will take
approximately for (4) hours to make the connections. I anticipate a
scheduling problem with the Faculty Club more than I do with the Sloan
School. This may have to be done on a weekend, late at night.
Building 4:
Due to the new short circuit requirements of Cogen we will
shutdown 480 volt lab power. (This also feeds power to pumps for the
AC in the President's area.) We will replace the existing 2400 volt
primary switch with a fusible switch. This shutdown will take 16
hours, therefore will be scheduled for a weekend.
Building 2:
Due to the new short circuit requirements for Cogen normal
electric power will be shutdown. We wll replace 2400 volt fuses and
fuse holders in the primary air switch. This will take six (6) hours
and I will request the shudown to be on a weekend.
Building 66:
We will shutdown normal power to replace two feeder breakers
in the main switchgear. One is for the sub-basement machine shop. The
other one feeds all the hood exhaust fans in the penthouse. Each
shutdown will be less than a half hour and could be done early on a
weekday morning.
Building E51:
We will shutdown all normal electric power to install new
feeders into the existing switchgear for the ongoing construction
project. This will take at least 8 hours and will most likely be done
on a weekend.
Building W20:
This being one of the most sensitive and difficult to schedule,
we will be very flexible. Preventive maintenance, testing and cleaning
are desperately needed on all of the feeder breakers in the main
switchgear. It will take close to 20 hours to do all of them. Most
shutdowns will be only a half hour or less, but I need a shutdown for
each breaker. I anticipate these shutdowns will take place late at
night, over several nights.
Buildings 1 and 3:
Three (3) short (1 hour or less) shutdowns are necessary to
raise the transformer taps to increase the voltage in this area of
campus. Early weekday mornings will, most likely, be the best time to
have these shutdowns.
Building E17:
It will be necessary to have three (3) or more shutdowns of,
perhaps, eight (8) hours or more for the construction project of the
sixth floor. These shutdowns will be scheduled with the people in
charge of the labs.
