Hi,

We have a Private Sun Sparc Classic in 66-365
( 18.63.0.124 ) and we observe the following
problems with it :

(1) Sparking Monitor :

Ever since it was first installed in Oct 94,
we've observed this strange phenomenon with the
    monitor.
Several times a day, if someone is using it
we will see the monitor goes blank and quickly goes
back to normal. It's like someone turns off the
monitor for a millisecond and then turns it
back on. We do not believe a normal and healthy
monitor should do this. We also suspect
that each time when this phenomenon occurs,
some damage could be done to the monitor.
Could it be because our monitor is faulty ?
If it is, can we get a replacement ?

(2) Files on root not working ??

We suspect that some of our files on
the hard disk is not working like normal.
For example, we cannot get password encrpytion
in the /etc/shadow file like what you would
normall see if you login and su to root
    to look at the file.

In addition, we are not using the shell
    /bin/csh. Instead, we are using
    /bin/athena/tcsh.

Also, we know that our finger program
    /usr/athena/bin/finger is bad. Every time
when you finger yourself, you get a core dump.
This starts to occur after someone has tried to
update his finger info on this machine.

Is it possible to have our root reformatted
again ? Would it cost anything (i.e. is this
covered in the maintenance contract if
it is really because the root has been
    damaged. )

Thanks.

I'm looking forward to your response.
