I reported the same problem last week. In the meantime I did
not see it happen again. Right now I tried to check it more thoroughly.
I login on marinara (a dialup server) and I see:
Warning: Unable to attach home directory.
NOTE -- Your home directory is temporary.
It will be deleted when this workstation deactivates.
....
Your home directory is currently unavailable.
This is probably due to a problem with the
fileserver on which your directory is stored.
You may use a temporary directory for this session.
If you do, any files you create and any mail you
incorporate will be DELETED when you logout and lost forever.
Would you like to continue this session, using a TEMPORARY
directory? (yes,no) [The default is no] y
Continuing with temporary directory...
=====================
Upon getting the prompt I was able to attach my own home directory, so
I could prove that the filesystem is available. [**]
From the pasta server (cannelloni) I started another two sessions on
marinara with the same problem. Then I also logged on pesto without any
problems. I connected back to my first seesion on marinara and recorded
the following output from "finger thanost":

Project: Something to keep me busy, e.g., F2 + Si -> @#%&*!??
Plan:
No plan posted. Write to me if you need details.
From the "Directory:" line you can tell the difference between
the two computers.
I was editing the line marked [**] above, when I was completely
disconnected from the pasta server. Upon redialing I got ravioli,
started a connection to marinara and got all my files right away, i.e.,
my home directory was readily available. I also recovered most of my
editing of this message.
This is the problem I noticed. I'm not filing a complaint, but
rather letting you know about the problem. I'm glad it is only a computer
misunderstanding rather than a hardware problem and can be circumvented
with a few key strokes.
Sorry to bother you again
