This machine seems to have a problem noticing when keys are
released. A lot of the time, after pressing and releasing a
shift, ctrl, or meta key (usually more than one at once), the
computer will act as if one or more of them is still held down.
This sometimes goes away by itself after a few keystrokes, at
other times, you need to press and release the key which is
"stuck" (after figuring out which one (or more) it is) to get the
key release to register properly.
This also happens with regular keys when you use them in
combination with the shift-type keys. For example, try this in
emacs: hold down ctrl. While still holding it down, press and
release x, then press and release s. As long as you keep holding
down ctrl, the machine thinks that s is still down, but not ctrl,
and you get a long string of s's. This stops as soon as you
release ctrl. (But sometimes, after that, it thinks that ctrl is
still down.)
