Hi, all. We are experiencing a problem today that I would like to
prevent from happening again. Apparently, the loud fans came on in
11-115 at 9am (usually an indicator that there is a problem with the AC
in the adjoining machine room). At about 10:30 the noise of this fan
was accompanied by fairly strong WD-40 fumes, coming from work that was
being done on the AC units in the machine room. The fumes were bad
enough that the consultants on-duty in 11-115 began getting headaches.
So, we have temporarily moved our on-duty consultants out of 11-115 into
a staff office in 11-124D. While this is a short-term solution, it
creates quite a crowded work situation, and requires that we post signs
informing our customers how to find us.
I may be mistaken, but from what I understand the work being done on the
AC units is some kind of necessary maintenance being performed by Phys
Plant at the request of hotline. If this is not the case, I apologize
for my misunderstanding. Initially, we were also told that the work
would be going on all week, but then we were told it would only be
happening today. I hope the second scenario is closer to the truth, and
if possible would like some verification of this.
In future, we would appreciate being notified in advance of scheduled
work that will include the loud fan going on in 11-115 and/or the
possibility of fumes. It would make it considerably easier for us to be
able to plan ahead for alternative on-duty consulting locations and/or
schedules. Preferable to us, of course, would be to have this work done
during hours when we have no consultants on-duty in 11-115, but I
realize this is not always a possibility.
