So, J.J. and John came by and looked at bill-the-cat this morning, and
it passed all its hardware diags. There was some suspicion that it's
odd kernel might be causing the slowdown, so I asked them to reinstall
the machine. We'll see how it goes; we might want to reparition and
reformat the drive, since it was in a pretty nonstandard (for client
values of `standard') configuration as a server machine..
