Apparently there was some miscommunication; the indicated VRC16 seemed
to function normally attached to a machine not running X for the
recallable past. Currently, it seems to shut itself off (including
the green LED on the front) a few seconds after being given any kind
of video signal; it functions `normally' (i.e. it does nothing) until
you give it a video input of some kind.
